“Becoming: An Introduction to Jung’s Concept of Individuation”

psychotherapy books

This book, written by Jungian Psychoanalyst Dr Deldon Anne McNeely, was written with the twenty-first century reader in mind.

It is written for those who have little or no knowledge of Carl Jung.

The book first identifies the historical and philosophical contexts in which Carl Jung lived. It then considers how his approach fits with the cultural issues of today.

Contemporary issues addressed include addiction, gender identity, the collective, depression and mental health.

Chapters in Part I (Introduction) include: Defining Psyche, Soul, Mind and Spirit, Accepting Responsibility, A Philosophical Moment and Self.

McNeely also touches on topics such as the overvaluing of the heroic ego, elitism, the function of introspection in an extroverted culture and the role of inner resources in self-development.

Religious parallels include perspectives on Buddhism and eastern thought, spiritual experience and the development of a “new myth” for modern times.

Those interested in alchemist Gerhard Dorn’s three stage of individuation will no doubt be interested in the chapter entitled “The Opus: Finding the Spirit in Matter”.

The book may be purchased through Fisher King Press and Amazon.
