Borderline Psychopathology

psychotherapy chair

Our understanding of borderline personality has undergone significant review in recent years. It is now widely understood to refer to a constellation of symptoms and behaviours that are an expression of an early attachment disorder. Those who receive a diagnosis of BPD have much in common with those known to have experienced abusive and neglectful early years of childhood.

This conference will provide an opportunity to explore effective psychotherapeutic work with borderline assessed clients/patients.

The programme includes

- the concept of borderline personality disorder

-the aetiology and developmental issues that may lie under aerline diagnosis

- the complexities of assessment

-symptoms attributed to BPD (disorganisation of mind, dysfunctional psychological defences, poor reality testing and dysregulation of affect)

-applications of effective treatment modalities: relational, psychoanalytic, attachment-based, DBT, mentalisation

- complexities in the psychotherapeutic relationship (such as boundary issues, transference and countertransference dynamics, amplified affect)

Speakers include Dr Gwen Adshead (Consultant Psychotherapist at Broadmoor Hospital), Dr Nuri Gene Cos (Consultant Psychiatrist and Director of the Traumatic Stress Service at the Maudsley Hospital),  Dr Jean Knox (Jungian analyst and psychiatrist) , Jack Nathan (Consultant Adult Psychotherapist at the Maudsley Hospital Psychotherapy and Self-Harm Out-Patients Service), Professor Brett Kahr and Dr Marco Chiesa.
