Lancet warning on alcohol related deaths

21/2/11 Doctors writing in The Lancet warn that alcohol-related deaths could claim quarter of a million lives in the UK in the next 20 years. Professor Sir Ian Gilmore commented: “It’s a drug. It happens to be legal, but it is a drug and there are more than 1.5 million people addicted to alcohol”. Showing at least 3 of the following is a sign of alcohol dependency: 1. strong desire/compulsion to drink; 2. difficulty in controlling the amount you drink; 3. developing withdrawal symptoms after drinking stops, with a need to start drinking again to relieve this; 4. increasing ‘tolerance’ to alcohol; 5. a waning interest in other pleasures/activities 6. continuing drinking despite its harmful effects. The mental health charity, Mind, notes: “The key to recovery from dependency is getting in touch with feelings and ‘holding’ those feelings without turning to the habit for support. It’s as simple – and as difficult – as that”. Possible sources of professional help: Alcoholics Anonymous, psychotherapy, GP.
